We’ve got exciting news to share with our hardtail community: the Rhode Island Division of Marine Fisheries has advanced to the final round in a highly competitive grant process that could kickstart a state-led research program for False Albacore and Atlantic Bonito.
If awarded, this grant will fund two years of essential research, including tagging kits for volunteer anglers, as well as other opportunities for you to contribute directly to the future of our fishery.
This project is a huge step toward better understanding and sustainably managing these fast-moving, hard-fighting species that so many of us love. But here’s the thing:
To seal the deal, they need letters of support from anglers like you.
Whether you're a fly caster chasing feeds from the beach or a captain guiding clients to blitzes, your voice matters. Help make this program a reality by sending a letter of support today.

Subject: Letter of Support for Albie & Bonito Research Proposal
Dear Mr. Williamson and Dr. Macfarlan,
I am pleased to provide this letter of support for your proposal, “A Pilot Study of the Biology and Fishery of False Albacore and Bonito in RI and Adjacent Waters,” for the Rhode Island Sea Grant 2026–2028 RFP.
My name is [Your Name] and I am a [recreational fisherman / charter captain / tackle shop owner / etc.].
False Albacore and Bonito are important to me because [share your personal or professional connection – the more specific the better].
I am deeply concerned by the lack of biological data and current regulation surrounding these species, especially as fishing pressure continues to increase. This proposed study would lay the foundation for data-driven, sustainable management — something I believe is urgently needed.
Thank you for the opportunity to express my support. I believe this project will strengthen Rhode Island’s coastal communities and ensure future generations can enjoy these incredible fish. Please feel free to contact me at [your email or phone] with any questions.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
[Your Title or Business, if applicable]
